About the cartoon:
At the start of the series, a young girl named Ichigo Momomiya attends an endangered species exhibit with her 'crush' and future boyfriend, Masaya Aoyama. After an earthquake, Ichigo and four other girls are bathed in a strange light. A cat appears before Ichigo, then merges with her. The next day she begins acting like a cat and, after meeting Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka, learns that she was infused with the DNA of the Iriomote Cat. Ryou and Keiichiro explain that this allows her to transform into Mew Ichigo, a powerful heroic cat girl. She is ordered to defeat chimera animas—alien parasites—which infect animals and turn them into monsters. Ryou and Keiichiro instruct Ichigo to find the four other girls from the exhibit—the remaining Mew Mews. They are Mint Aizawa, a spoiled, wealthy girl who is infused with the genes of the Ultramarine Lorikeet; Lettuce Midorikawa, a meek girl who endures constant bullying and absorbs the genes of the Finless Porpoise; young Pudding Fong, who receives the genes of the Golden Lion Tamarin; and Zakuro Fujiwara, a professional model infused with the genes of the Gray Wolf.

The five Mew Mews battle the chimera animas and their alien controllers, Kish, Pie and Tart. Kish claims to be in love with Ichigo; he tries to gain her love despite the fact that he is trying to eliminate the other Mew Mews. Two more aliens, Pie and Tart, later join Kish in trying to destroy the Mew Mews.

As the fighting intensifies, the Mew Mews are tasked with finding "mew aqua," a material created from pure water that contains immense power for combating the alien attacks. During a battle with Kish at an aquarium, Ichigo is in danger of losing when the mysterious Blue Knight appears and rescues her. He returns periodically throughout the series, protecting Ichigo from various dangers; it is later revealed that the Blue Knight is in fact Masaya. Shortly after this discovery, Masaya collapses and transforms again, into Deep Blue—the alien leader who wants to destroy humanity. After explaining to Ichigo that Masaya was a false form for temporary use, Deep Blue attacks the Mew Mews. Masaya's personality briefly reappears and he uses a nearby mew aqua drop to destroy Deep Blue, killing himself in the process. Crying over his body, Ichigo pours her power into Masaya to save his life, losing her own in the process. Masaya kisses her, changing her back to a human, and revives her. Ryou gives Pie the remaining mew aqua to save the aliens' world, after which Kish, Pie and Tart say their goodbyes and return to their own world.
Characters:
Ichigo Momomiya is the series' main protagonist and the leader of the Mew Mews. While at an endangered species exhibit with her 'crush' and future boyfriend, Masaya Aoyama, she is bathed in a strange light and a cat appears and merges with her. The next day, Ichigo finds that she has begun to take on some feline mannerisms. After meeting Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka, she learns that she was infused with the DNA of the Iriomote Cat and now has the power to transform into Mew Ichigo, a powerful heroic cat girl. As Mew Ichigo, she has a cat tail with a bell at the end, cat ears, and pink gloves on her hands. As the series progresses, the cat DNA inside her grows stronger, causing Ichigo to grow ears and a tail when she is excited, and later causing her to change completely into a small black cat when she is is greatly excited. To change back from her cat form, she must be kissed by someone—human or animal.
Mint Aizawa is the second Mew Mew to be introduced in the series. At their first meeting, Mint lends Ichigo a handkerchief, but also makes snide comments causing Ichigo to consider her a rude, sarcastic person. After learning about the Mew Mew project and that there are four other Mew Mews to find, Ichigo suspects Mint must be one of them. Ichigo is unable to confirm her suspicions while visiting with Masaya to return the hankie, so she breaks into Mint's home later. A chimera anima takes over Mint's dog Mickey, and during the battle, Mint's mark is revealed. Infused with the genes of a Ultramarine Lorikeet, Mint grows a pair of bird wings appear on her back and a bird's tail when she transforms into Mew Mint. She fights with a bow and arrow.
Lettuce Midorikawa is the third member of the Mews Mews formally introduced to the readers. Lettuce first appears in the story when her classmates bully her at the endangered species exhibit and the other future Mew Mews come to her defense. Lettuce comes to Cafe Mew Mew with the same classmates, who are again bullying her. The girls order Lettuce to their school at night to investigate a rumor about a ghost attacking people at the pool. Ichigo again comes to her defense, and once alone, she and Lettuce introduce themselves. That night, Mint drags Ichigo to Lettuce's school to search for the ghost, presuming it is a chimera anima. At the pool, they are surprised to discover that the "ghost" is Lettuce. Terrified of her new Mew Mew powers and afraid they would cause her to be shunned, Lettuce became confused and began lashing out in fear. Ichigo and Mint are able to calm her down and help her see that rather than costing her friends, her new powers have helped her find real friends. Infused with the DNA of a Finless Porpoise, Lettuce's legs can change into a dolphin's tail while she is underwater, greatly improving her swimming ability and allowing her to breathe underwater. She fights with a pair of castanets.
Pudding Fong is the fourth Mew Mew introduced to the readers, though she first appears at the endangered animal exhibit with the other future Mew Mews to help stop bullies from picking on Lettuce. She reappears towards the end of the first volume, performing acrobatic tricks for Ichigo and Masaya at the zoo, then asking them to pay for the performance. When Kish and the Mew Mews begin a battle at the zoo Ichigo saves Pudding from a fall, only to have Pudding push her out of the way when an elephant is about to step on her. Rather than being crushed, Pudding escapes and transforms into her Mew Mew form. Infused with the DNA of a Golden Lion Tamarin, Pudding grows a monkey tail and ears while transformed, and fights with a pair of rings.
Zakuro Fujiwara is the last of the main Mew Mews introduced. As with the others, she first appears at the start of the series, helping rescue Lettuce from bullies at the endangered animal exhibit. She reappears at end of the second volume, when Mint finds a picture of her in a magazine and recognizes her from the museum. When the Mew Mews first meet Zakuro, she seems friendly, but after discovering who they are, she coldly brushes them off. Kish decides to target Zakuro, because she is separated from the others. The Mew Mews come to her aid, and after the battle, Zakuro decides she will make an exception for them and become a part of the team. Infused with the DNA of a Gray Wolf, Zakuro has a wolf tail and ears while in her Mew Mew form, and fights with a whip.
Berry Shirayuki is introduced in Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode as the series' main protagonist. In a la Mode, the Mew Mews' leader, Ichigo, has gone to study abroad in England with her boyfriend Masaya. The twelve year old girl becomes the sixth Mew Mew and temporarily takes Ichigo's place by becoming the new leader of the group. Berry is a newcomer to the area, and takes a daily, hour long, subway ride to the city where she attends a private middle school. Berry becomes the first Mew Mew to be infused with the DNA of two endangered species, the Andean Mountain Cat and the Amami Rabbit, after she follows Ryou Shirogane to the Cafe Mew Mew to thank him for saving her from a bad fall, accidentally enters the Mew Mew's headquarters, and runs through an experimental new machine for infusing DNA into girls. Berry quickly adapts to her new role as a Mew Mew. Like Ichigo, she is given a robot companion, the R3000, whom she renames Ucha. Ucha not only provides her guidance in fighting, but also transforms into the wand she uses to perform attacks. As the "second strongest" Mew Mew, Berry becomes the primary target of the series antagonists, the Saint Rose Crusaders. As Berry and the other Mew Mews continue to eliminate the chimera animas and fight the Saint Rose Crusaders, they are joined by Mew Ichigo, who returns from England after sensing her friends were in trouble.
Kish is the first alien to appear on Earth to reclaim it. He first shows himself to Ichigo at the end of the first volume of the manga, appearing at the zoo and kissing her. At first, he just considers Ichigo an "interesting toy" but to avoid getting in trouble he is willing to kill her. In future encounters, he continues flirting with Ichigo, calling her "honey", appearing behind her to hug her or try to steal a kiss, and saying they have a "special relationship" despite Ichigo's strong protests. Kish tends to be playful and carefree, enjoying fighting with the Mew Mews as though it were a fun game. His lackadaisical approach results in him being put under temporary house arrest, but Pie's subsequent failures result in Kish being freed to continue their mission.
Tart comes to Earth with Pie to aid Kish in preparing the planet of the arrival of Deep Blue. Energetic and often childish, Tart taunts Kish for losing to the Mew Mews, saying he's weak. Like Pie and Kish, Tart can fly, teleport himself, and create chimera animas. He primarily fights with physical attacks and the chimera animals, but is also capable of manipulating plants and using them to bind people and to use an energy beam attack. In the anime, he is also shown fighting with a click-clack toy.
